The private house of the name-giving Jitzchak Meir Alter was turned into a synagogue with a yeshiva in 1864 , whereby Jitzchak Meir, (spoken name Isaak ) Alter was also the director of the yeshiva and founder of the Gerrer Hasidim rabbi dynasty , a Hasidic movement. Alter was also referred to as Chidushei HaRim , corresponding to his Torah work of the same name.
The synagogue was confiscated in 1943, during the German occupation . After that, the building served as a warehouse. Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter (1866–1948), the third Gerrer Rebbe, managed to escape from the Holocaust with three of his sons .
