Ischchan (title)
Ischchan ( Armenian իշխան English: Ishkhan , Turkish İşhan ) was a hereditary title of the high nobility in Armenia in the late Middle Ages .
etymology
The word goes back to the Armenian verb ishchel (armen .: իշխել) which means to rule , to rule . The title Ischchan was used partly in parallel and partly as an alternative to other Armenian feudal titles such as Nacharar , paron , douks , ter or melik .
"Ishkhan" is also used as a first name. "Ishkhan" was also the pseudonym of Nikoghayos Mikayelian a freedom fighter (fedayi).
