Isfjord Radio
Isfjord Radio is a Norwegian coastal radio station on Svalbard .
Isfjord Radio is located on the Isfjord , on Kapp Linné , the northwestern tip of the Nordenskiöld-Land peninsula . The radio station is now automated and controlled remotely by Bodø Radio . In 2006 Telenor sold the radio station to the Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani . From January 1, 2008, the buildings will be rented to Basecamp Spitsbergen and the rooms will be rented to tourists for overnight stays. The radio station is supplied with electricity by a diesel generator.
Isfjord Radio and a lighthouse were built by the Soviet Union before the Second World War to report the sometimes difficult ice and weather conditions to shipping. A Soviet shipwreck in the 1930s was the reason for this. During the evacuation of Svalbard in 1941, the radio station was torn down or burned down. After the war, the radio station was rebuilt in the same place. In the international geophysical year 1957/58, the station was expanded to include a new main building with a generator room.
