history

According to an old legend, the mosque is said to have been built on the site of a common grave of Muslim fighters who defended Kazan in 1552 . The grave was marked with a "big old stone" (Tatar for iske taş ).

The mosque was built in 1801/02 with donations from the merchant Gabdulla bin Gabdulsälam bin Ütämisch al-Maskarawi († 1932). The qibla of the mosque was administered by the Tatar theologian Gabdennasir Kursawi . Probably between 1830 and 1840 the building was reconstructed and expanded by Alexander Schmidt.

In the 19th century the church was run by imams from the Amirkhan family; including the historian Husain Amirkhan, who was the mullah of the mosque from 1847 to 1889 , and his son, the educator Muhametzarif Amirkhan, who was an imam from 1875 to 1921.

Like many other mosques in the region, this one was closed at the end of the 1930s following a decision by the Central Executive Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan and only made accessible to the faithful again in 1994.
