The Isla de Lobos is about eight kilometers from Punta del Este located Uruguayan island. With around 200,000 seals , sea lions and elephant seals , the rocky island is home to the largest colony of these marine mammals in South America . Numerous species of birds also live on the island.
The island cannot be entered as it is a nature reserve . It is a great attraction for tourists who watch them from excursion boats.
The only noteworthy structure on the island is a 59 meter high lighthouse , which was built in 1906 and replaced a predecessor from 1858. Its maintenance is the responsibility of the Navy.
