Island Press is a US non-governmental organization (NGO) that publishes books on environmental and nature conservation and resource management . The publishing program follows a multidisciplinary approach with contributions from the natural and social sciences and aims to critically examine topics from the ecological spectrum. According to its own information, the publisher offers practical and solution-oriented information for decision-makers, experts and interested citizens.
Island Press was founded in 1978 in Northern California. The organization has been reorganized since 1984 and has since focused on books on ecological discussions with a focus on biological diversity, landscape planning , environmental problems in the context of economic globalization and other topics. As part of the reorganization, the organization moved to Washington, DC The shipping is now at the University of Chicago .
Started with a handful of titles about Iceland and three employees, the organization grew to a 30-person NGO with a 16-person board of directors. The board is made up of members from different scientific and practical areas. Since 1983 Island Press has sold over 3 million books and has grown to become a leading environmental publisher. With the Science and Environment Resource Center (SERC) Island Press brings together experts from research and politics for public relations. SERC is an online database with information from reputable experts who are available to journalists, politicians and other interested parties to answer questions about the most pressing environmental problems. They give interviews on request, give lectures and are available for nature conservation and environmental protection events.
