The series was built on behalf of the Ministry of War Transport (MOWT). With a length of around 43 meters and a load capacity of around 300 tonnes, the Isles-type design was the smallest standard British tanker type built in series during the Second World War. A diesel engine served as the drive system. All four units were delivered by J. Harker in Knottingley in 1944/45 and were given two-part names with Empire and an attached British Isles name.
