Israel Sarug

Israel Sarug (ישראל סרוג Israel Sarug Aschkenasi , also סרוק Saruk ) was a Jewish scholar and Kabbalist who lived and worked around 1600 .

He was a student of Isaac Luria and shortly before his death made a vow to his master that he would spread the Kabbalistic teaching. Between 1592 and 1599 he won many followers in different parts of Italy and in this spirit also worked in Germany and Amsterdam .

Among these were Menahem Azariah da Fano , whom he persuaded to buy works by Luria for a lot of money, Aaron Rechiah of Modena , the author of Ma'abar Yabboḳ and Abraham Cohen Herrera .

His cabalistic theory was also influenced by the works of Adam Kadmon .
