Istituto Dalle Molle di Studi sull'Intelligenza Artificiale

The Dalle Molle Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (ital. Istituto Dalle Molle di Studi sull'Intelligenza Artificiale (IDSIA) ) was founded in 1988 by the private Dalle Molle Foundation . In 1997, IDSIA was listed as one of the best AI research institutions in the world in the field of bio-inspired AI.

IDSIA has been a public research institution since 2000 and is associated with the local universities USI ( University of Italian Switzerland , Italian Università della Svizzera italiana ) and SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences of Italian Switzerland, Italian Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana ).

Ant algorithms developed by Marco Dorigo (former employee) and director Luca Maria Gambardella are now widely used in the field of numerical optimization. The research area of ​​swarm intelligence is still one of the institute's main focuses. Another focus is machine learning and artificial neural networks.

Since 2007 there has been another focus with a focus on robotics .

The IDSIA Robotics Lab , especially with research in the field of robot swarms and humanoid robots, won several awards.
