Italian Embassy in Buenos Aires
The Italian Embassy in Buenos Aires is Italy's diplomatic mission in Argentina . It is located in the Palermo district north of downtown Buenos Aires on the Río de la Plata on Calle Billinghurst and Avenida del Libertador .
history
Official Argentine-Italian relations began with a friendship, trade and shipping agreement that Victor Emmanuel II concluded with the Argentine government in 1855. At that time, the increasing immigration of Italians began, which still shapes the country today. Until 1924, the Italian diplomatic mission in Buenos Aires was a simple legation. On the occasion of a visit by the Italian Crown Prince Umberto II , it was decided to upgrade it to an embassy and move it to an appropriate location. The Argentine President Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear referred to the new property of his relative Federico Bosch-Alvear, who wanted to sell it without ever having lived in it because of the inclined and not frontal entrance to Avenida Libertador . Bosch-Alvear's predilection for French architecture has shaped the Italian embassy building in Buenos Aires to this day.
