The Italian Rescue Medal at Sea was donated by decree of King Victor Emmanuel II on April 15, 1860 for seafarers after rescuing people in danger from shipwreck. The award was a reward for people of all levels who had bravely and at their own risk of death had proven themselves in rescuing people in danger at sea.

It consisted of a gold and a silver medal, with the gold medal only being awarded for very outstanding achievements.

The front of the medal shows the Italian coat of arms with the inscription AL VALORE DI MARINA . The band is dark blue with a wider and a narrower white stripe.
