Wroclaw Italian Military Cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Italian Military Cemetery in Breslau is a resting place of Italian soldiers and prisoners of war who were captured by Germany during the twelfth Battle of the Isonzo near Caporetto from October 24 to 27, 1917 and died in the prison camp.

The construction of the cemetery on the site of a park, which also includes the Grabiszyński Cemetery , began in 1927, the cost of which was borne entirely by the Italian government. The opening ceremony took place on November 2, 1928. The remains of 1016 soldiers who died in the Wroclaw prison camp and in seventy other cities in Lower Silesia are buried.

At the end of 1943, 20 Italian soldiers were buried. After the armistice declared by Marshal Pietro Badoglio on September 8, 1943, they were captured by the Nazis and probably shot in Breslau.

In the middle, where the two main paths cross, there is an obelisk designed by the sculptor Angelo Negretti with the inscription: Pax - L'Italia ai suoi figli caduti nella guerra mondiale MCMXV-MCMXVIII .
