The Italian Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia in Italian .

With around 1.5 million articles (as of May 2019), it is the eighth largest language version of Wikipedia.

history

The Italian Wikipedia was founded on May 11, 2001 and was first edited on June 11, 2001. In August 2005, the Italian Wikipedia overtook the Spanish and Portuguese editions, making it the eighth largest edition of Wikipedia. The main reason the article jumped so quickly was a bot that automatically created short articles, for example for minerals or communities in France and Spain . About 43 percent of all articles on the Italian language Wikipedia were created by bots. On September 9, 2005 it cracked the 100,000 mark, on June 22, 2010 it had 700,000 articles, on March 12, 2012, 900,000 articles and on January 22, 2013, one million articles. In 2009 the Italian language version received the Premiolino Journalism Prize .

From October 4 to 6, 2011, the Italian Wikipedia protested against a draft law DDL intercettazioni , which would have given anyone the right to have things perceived as damaging to their reputation removed without being checked. During this period, all article requests were redirected to a protest page.
