Example of the item-item-description analysis pattern

The item-item-description pattern, sometimes also called the item type pattern, is an analysis pattern from software technology according to Peter Coad et al. It is used for data consolidation.

With many instances, some attributes always assume the same combinations of values (attribute dependency). This leads to multiple storage of the same data, which in turn can lead to problems with updates.

This problem can be solved by introducing a new class with an aggregation relationship (“class normalization”). Compare with normalization of relational database models .
