Itqiy (meteorite)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Itqiy is a meteorite found in 1990 in the West Sahara . The total mass of 4.72 kg is divided into two fragments of 0.41 kg and 4.31 kg. It is classified as enstatite chondrite EH7 and thus belongs to an extremely rare subclass of only 2 (!) Meteorites worldwide. The fall of Itqiy was allegedly observed, but a terrestrial age of 5,800 years has been determined with the help of the radionuclide 14 C. The age of irradiation was measured to be 30.1 million years.

As an enstatite chondrite , Itqiy must be classified under reducing, i.e. H. oxygen-poor and highly metamorphic conditions. It has a high metal content (~ 22% vol.).

Despite these and other similarities, there are also discrepancies with the enstatite chondrites. The composition and texture show similarities to the Lodranites . This suggests that Itqiy comes from a different mother body than the other enstatites.
