Iuliodunum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iuliodunum is a name invented in neo-Latin poetry of the 16th century and soon became widely used for the French city Loudun (Latin name in the Middle Ages: Losdunum , documented in 1059). Centuries later, Iuliodunum (or Juliodunum ) is still the ancient name for the city of Loudun.

The term Iuliodunum appears for the first time in 1530 in the title of an ode that the neo-Latin poet Salmon Macrin (Latin artist name from 1528: Salmonius Macrinus Iuliodunensis ) dedicates to his native town Loudun: Alloquitur Iuliodunum (freely translated: "Invocation to Loudun").

When inventing this poetic name, the poet's concern was to suggest a close connection between Julius Caesar and his hometown Loudun (amalgamation of the names Iulius and Lodun : Iu-lio-dun- ). This gives Loudun the prestige of a "city founded by Julius Caesar" and the poet, who previously, in 1528, had chosen the nickname Iuliodunensis for this purpose , the prestige of a "scion of the city of Loudun founded by Julius Caesar".
