Ixtab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to Diego de Landa, Ixtab was the goddess of suicide in Maya mythology . In the Yucatec Maya culture, suicide, especially by hanging , was viewed as an honorable way to die under certain circumstances, comparable to the death of warriors in battle, of victims or of women who died in childbirth. Ixtab took on the role of a psychopompos and accompanied the souls of the people who were divorced by suicide to paradise, which they reached without going through the underworld Xibalba . The image of a dead woman hanging on a rope was used to represent this deity.
