Alicja Jadwiga Kotowska
Alicja Jadwiga Kotowska , actually Maria Jadwiga Kotowska , (born November 20, 1899 in Warsaw , Poland , † November 11, 1939 in the forest of Wielka Piaśnica ) was a blessed Polish nun .
Life
As early as 1918, while studying medicine at the University of Warsaw, she became a member of the Polish Army under Józef Piłsudski and worked as a medic of the Polish Red Cross on the Eastern Front during the First World War . In 1932 she received the Order of Polonia Restituta for her achievements and bravery during the fighting . In 1922 she entered the monastery of the Resurrectionists in Wejherowo and took the religious name Alicja . In 1929 she defended her master's thesis in chemistry, became a teacher and then director at the monastery school in Wejherowo. After the outbreak of World War II , the Gestapo placed her under arrest on October 24, 1939. On November 11, 1939, she was shot, along with numerous other clergy and members of the Polish intelligentsia from the Pomerania region , during the Piaśnica massacre .
Pope John Paul II beatified her on June 13, 1999 along with 107 other Polish martyrs from the German occupation regime. The Resurrectionist elementary school in Wejherowo has been named after her ever since.
