Jädraås – Tallås Järnväg is a Swedish museum railway in Gästrikland near Gävle . It runs from Jädraås to Svartbäcken nedre.

history

The railway line between Jädraås and Tallås was built in 1881 as part of the DONJ, Dala-Ockelbo-Norrsundets Järnväg . This section of the DONJ's railway was designated as TJJ (Tallås-Jädraås-Järnväg) in the concession. The route from Svartbäcken to Tallås was completed in 1880 as part of the BTJ (Lilla Björnmossen-Tallås-Järnväg). The DONJ operating license was based on six concessions, each of which had been created for the individual parts of the railway, although all of these parts of the railway were owned by Kopparberg & Hofors Sågverksaktiebolag (KHAB). It was not until 1897 that the DONJ's entire line from Linghed in Dalarna to the port in Norrsundet was in operation.

The route was mainly used for internal transport by KHAB. Timber transport to the sawmill in Linghed and the later pulp mill in Norrsundet. The main reason for the creation of the DONJ, however, was the transport of iron ore and charcoal to the blast furnace in Jädraås and the further transport of the iron products to the rolling mills in Brattors and Wij as well as to the port in Norrsundet. Passenger traffic was always limited, as the railway mainly handled internal works traffic. Nevertheless, in the record year 1916, 79,571 people took the train.

The blast furnace in Jädraås was shut down in 1935, so that the iron transports stopped that year. The volume of passenger traffic also fell significantly. From 1949 not even 10,000 people were transported annually, so that passenger traffic was completely discontinued in 1959 (84 passengers). All that remained was the transport of wood to Norrsundet.

In 1970 the timber transports on the railway were stopped. The Jädraås-Tallås section and the section to today's Svartbäcken nedre were retained for museum traffic by the JTJ. It is now owned by the JTJ.

The kilometering of the route was retained, so that Jädraås is located at kilometer 41.056 as in 1881.

For a few years it has also been possible to go to Svartbäcken nedre. This station did not exist when the railway was active; the correct railway station in Svartbäcken is three kilometers away. The trains stop 25 minutes in Tallås as there is a café here. The branch to the gravel pit is only operated on special days such as Stora Tåghelgen ("The Great Train Weekend"). The Pallanite stop also has a siding.
