Jörg Brümmer

Jörg Brümmer (* 1964 in Wolgast , Germany ) is a former German judoka and sumo athlete. He is multiple military world champion in judo and became the first German amateur world champion in sumo in 1998.

Jörg Brümmer started judo during his school days. He was a sports soldier with the NVA in the ASK Frankfurt (Oder) and was accepted into the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr after German reunification . In 1991 he was fifth at the Judo World Championships.

After he had ended his career as a judo competitive athlete in the spring of 1995 , he began sumo in the fall of the same year. In his first competition in Riesa he became European champion. In the following years he won other international championship titles in this sport. In 1998 he became the first German amateur world champion in sumo.

Jörg Brümmer has been the men's national sumo coach since October 2007.

The plot of the film Sumo Bruno (2001), in which he played a supporting role, is in places based on Jörg Brümmer's sumo career.
