Jörg Thieme (boxer)

Jörg Thieme (born February 26, 1978 in Wuppertal ) is a former German amateur boxer .

Athletic career

At the age of 10 he began his sporting career, initially in karate and kickboxing . As a kickboxer, he completed over 150 fights, of which he only lost 20. He was multiple German youth and junior champion. In 1992, at the age of 14, he became IBDF Junior European Champion in light contact.

Since kickboxing is not an Olympic discipline, Thieme decided in 1991 to start amateur boxing . His greatest successes were winning the "Pre-Olympic Tournament" in Schwerin, the German youth championship in 1994 with a victory over Michel Trabant , the German junior championship in 1995 and 5th place at the European junior championships in Siófok / Hungary.

From 1994 to 1996, Thieme trained as an amateur at the Universum boxing promotion professional camp, where he was able to work with greats like Arthur Grigorjan , Dariusz Michalszewski and Regina Halmich .

In the 1995/1996/1997 season he boxed in the 1st Bundesliga for Sparta Flensburg (BC Flensburg). At his side, today's greats like Sven Ottke and the Klitschkos fought at Sparta . In 1997 his boxing career was interrupted for a year due to an accident.

Then he rose again for the (now relegated) BC Flensburg in the ring, but now in the 3rd division. In 1999 he again made the leap to the 1st Boxing Bundesliga. This time at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . At the side of Adnan Catic (now known as Felix Sturm ), he tried his best again, but ended boxing completely in 2001 in favor of his professional career. His amateur career spanned 99 fights, including 76 wins, three draws and 20 losses.
