Jewish cemeteries in Riga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are documented two Jewish cemeteries in Riga , the capital of Latvia :

The area of the old Jewish cemetery (Latvian: Vecā ebreju kapsēta ) was the first piece of land in Riga that the Jews living there were able to acquire. The cemetery was inaugurated in 1725. Even before the First World War , there was no longer enough space.

In the 1920s a new cemetery was built in Smerlis. The cemetery in the Moscow district was now called the "Old Jewish Cemetery". On December 8, 2010 the (new) Jewish cemetery was desecrated: around 90 gravestones were smeared with white swastikas .
