Dieren Jewish cemetery

The Jewish cemetery of Dieren in the municipality of Rheden in the province of Gelderland ( Netherlands ) was donated by the local Jewish community leadership in 1892.

An area of 1,250 m² near "Goudakkers" ( gold fields ) was approved by the peasantry of Dieren bought. In 1925, a stone Jewish mortuary was built.

The cemetery is located in 2010 on the edge of a residential area between the Alphons Diepenbrocklaan and the Bernhard Zweerslaan and has been maintained by the municipality of Rheden since 1950.

Graves

In the cemetery there are 41 grave slabs and 23 stone grave pillars. Jewish books are buried in two places that were not allowed to be destroyed due to religious regulations. Of the 62 graves, 28 are children's graves, most of them from before 1915.

Using a sketch of the location from 1943, which was presumably drawn up by the last Chasan von Dieren, Abraham van Baaren, and other data found later, an overview of the burials could be compiled. The last funeral took place in 1986.

Jews in Dieren

The first mention of a Jew in Dieren dates from a document from the year 1713. It was not until around 1870 that Jewish services in a synagogue have come down to us. At that time there were around 50 Jews in the community of Rheden. Until 1882 Dieren was under the jurisdiction of the Synagogue of Doesburg, but in that year it was recognized as an independent congregation by the Dutch Israelite Church Fellowship.

Own newly built synagogue Mikveh and school premises were opened at Spoorstraat in 1884th This synagogue was looted and badly damaged by supporters of the NSB in 1943 . After the Second World War, the Jewish community was not rebuilt. The building of the former synagogue "Sjoel" was used, among other things, as a smokehouse for a butcher, mini-theater and church room for a Christian community.

On March 7, 2010, the "Sjoel" von Dieren was inaugurated again as a synagogue and then taken into use by the liberal Jewish community of Gelderland.
