Jewish cemetery (castle on Fehmarn)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery of Burg auf Fehmarn is located on the Sundchaussee in the direction of Blieschendorf.

history

Immigrants from Lübeck-Moisling founded a small community in Burg on Fehmarn in the 19th century. In 1800 the community laid a cemetery on a triangular piece of land on the road towards Blieschendorf . The last funeral took place there in 1879. In the years that followed, the Jewish community must have dissolved. When the Sundchaussee was expanded in 1923/24, there were no more Jews on Fehmarn. Visible graves are no longer available. In 1957 a memorial stone was set on the area and in 1958 the property was surrounded with a hedge and the interior was redesigned to a lawn. The memorial stone was renewed in 2007.
