Jūrō Kara
Jūrō Kara ( Japanese 唐 十郎 , Kara Jūrō , real name: Ōtsuru Yoshihide ( 大 靏 義 英 ); born February 11, 1940 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese actor, playwright and writer.
Life
Kara studied acting and theatrical arts at Meiji University and joined the Jōkyō-Gekijō theater group in 1963. With his performances outside the theaters in a red tent ( Red Tent ) he became one of the leading representatives of the underground theater movement ( angura ) in Japan in the 1960s . In 1970 he won the Kishida Kunio Prize with Shōjo . He toured Korea (1972), Bangladesh (1973) and Palestine with his troupe.
In 1985 he dissolved the Jōkyō-Gekijō group and in 1987 founded the group Kara-gumi with young actors . As a professor at Yokohama State University , he founded the Kara-zemi student group in 2000 . For the play Doro ningyō he received the 2003 Kinokuniya Theater Prize , the Tsuruya Namboku Dramatist Prize , the Yomiuri Literature Prize and the Yomiuri Theater Prize . In 2006 he was awarded the Honorary Prize of the Yomiuri Theater Prize and a Special Lifetime Achievement Prize from Meiji University. He also received the Akutagawa Prize in 1989 for the novel Sagawa-kun kara no tegami (based on a real case of cannibalism in Paris) .
