J. Carlos Santamarina

Juan Carlos Santamarina (born before 1982) is an Argentine professor of civil engineering ( geotechnical engineering ) and environmental engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology .

Santamarina studied civil engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (graduation as civil engineer 1982), at the University of Maryland (master's degree in 1984) and at Purdue University , where he received his doctorate in 1987. Before becoming a professor at Georgia Tech, he taught at New York University's Polytechnic University and the University of Waterloo .

In addition to the investigation of soil mechanical fundamental questions with newly developed test procedures down to the grain and pore level (for example small needles that measure electromagnetic properties of the soil and their variability in the mm range and below), high-resolution monitoring and inversion techniques, and forces acting at the grain level he deals with applications such as energy storage, carbon dioxide storage and storage of fly ash and radioactive waste, extraction of petroleum and methane hydrates from storage rocks.

He is on the Geotechnical and Engineering Geology Committee of the US National Academies and a member of the Argentine Academy of Sciences.

In 2014 he was selected for the Terzaghi Lecture .
