The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC, German National University of Córdoba ) is a university in Argentina . It is located in the city of Cordoba in the province of the same name .
The university is the oldest university in the country and one of the oldest in Latin America . After the Universidad de Buenos Aires , it is the largest university in the country with around 115,000 students.
history
It was founded in 1613 by the Jesuits . In spite of rapidly changing conditions, the balance of power within the university remained unchanged until the early 20th century. The ruling oligarchy, which held onto power through nepotism, provoked protests from the student population in 1918. The result was the Reforma Universitaria , a democratic reform movement that was supported by the liberal Argentine government Hipólito Yrigoyens and gradually encompassed all universities in the country and numerous others in South America.
In the military dictatorships of 1966–1973 and 1976–1983, the democratic achievements were partially reversed. Since the democratization of Argentina, the discussion has flared up about the role of the university, which in Argentina is traditionally free and without restrictions on access . In 2004, due to the overloading of some very popular courses (especially medicine ), it was discussed for the first time to introduce an upper limit for applicants in some subjects. However, the legal basis for this is still unclear.
