The acronym JAMMA or Jamma stands for J apan A musement M achinery M anufacturers A ssociation and a uniform interface standard for game boards and machines. JAMMA also stands for the amusement machine show of the same name in Japan.

JAMMA connectors

When JAMMA is mentioned, one usually does not mean the above-mentioned association, but a 56-pin interface with which the machine cabinet is connected to the actual game board. The JAMMA connector was introduced in 1986 and makes it possible to operate boards from different manufacturers in one and the same arcade machine with the same standard. It hardly makes any difference whether the machine is a universal housing or a "dedicated cabinet" (the external appearance is dedicated to a special game). Until 1986, most machines were designed exclusively for certain games or games from certain manufacturers. Boards with other standards could only be installed with self-made adapters.

A gaming machine cabinet provides inputs for RGB video with CSync, stereo sound and two coin locks on the JAMMA connector, as well as outputs for two sets of game controllers with nine digital channels each (usually start button, 4-way and 4 fire buttons), as well as two outputs for coin acceptors , a service switch and a tilt switch . The interpretation of the meaning of the outputs is left to the game board, so that in principle every game with a JAMMA connector can run in every cabinet with a JAMMA connector, there may be differences in operation due to the selection and arrangement of the control elements in the cabinet.
