The Haidel is 1165.6  m above sea level. NHN high wooded mountain in the Bavarian Forest east of Freyung and northeast of Waldkirchen in the Freyung-Grafenau district . Haidel Tower

Lookout tower on the Haidel

When a heavy storm hit the forest on the ridge of the Haidel summit in 1925, one recognized the excellent view from the summit over the hills of the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest to the Alps . In order to preserve this view, a first 15 m high wooden observation tower was built in 1928 before the summit was forested again. This first tower had to be demolished again in 1948 because it was in disrepair.

In 1967 Pastor Herbert Kessler founded the Leopoldsreut section of the Bavarian Forest Association . The association opened up the Haidel region through numerous hiking trails and set itself the goal of creating a tourist attraction with a new observation tower. In 1979 the new 25 m high wooden tower was opened. The climatic conditions on the Haidel summit required strong efforts on the part of the forest association section in order to maintain the tower. But even two major renovations in 1984 and 1990 could not prevent the second tower from being closed in 1997 due to disrepair and demolished in 1998.

In order to preserve the Haidel-Turm excursion destination, the “Förderverein Haidel-Aussichtsturm e. V. “founded. In 1999, together with the Leopoldsreut forest club section, active work was carried out on the construction of the third Haidel observation tower. On June 27, 1999, Pastor Herbert Kessler, together with the pastors of the Haidel parishes, was able to bless the new tower and the tower cross donated by Passau Bishop Franz Xaver Eder during a festival service. The third Haidel observation tower is 35.16 m high and made of Douglas fir and larch wood. 159 steps lead to the 30.33 m high viewing platform.

Transmitters

The excellent all-round view of the lower Bavarian Forest is also used to operate transmitter systems.

The Deutsche Telekom transmission tower on the Haidel summit is a 60 m high, self-supporting tubular steel tower with two platforms. It serves as a radio relay node for the Bavarian Forest and as a television transmitter for ZDF and Bavarian television .

Since April 3, 2007, the observation tower has also served as an antenna carrier. A directional radio antenna system was installed on the roof , which is to supply the surrounding towns of Freyung , Grainet , Haidmühle , Herzogsreut , Hinterschmiding , Jandelsbrunn and Philippsreut with BWA , broadband internet via radio.
