History and technology

In 1958, its cruising speed of 80 km / h on the newly electrified Cape Gauge route between Tokyo and Osaka was remarkable. The railcars were used as Kodama express trains. The 553 km route was covered in 6 hours and 50 minutes. One unit consisted of eight fully air-conditioned cars with a dome-like raised engine driver's cab at each end.

The traction motors with a total hourly output of 1550 kW (2077 hp) were housed in the two end cars as well as in the second and seventh cars, which had resistance and caliper brakes, the non-powered intermediate cars had disc brakes. The maximum permissible speed was 160 km / h, the regular use took place at a maximum of 110 km / h.

The space capacity per multiple unit was 425 passengers.

The multiple units formed one of the models for the development of the famous Shinkansen class 0 .

Others

Similar looking vehicles for the AC network were classified as series 481.
