The class E10 ( Japanese E10 形 , E10-gata ) is a tank locomotive with a 1'E2 'h2t wheel arrangement, procured by the Japanese Government Railways (JGR).

history

After the end of World War II , the Japanese Government Railways was banned from building new locomotives by the GHQ due to financial difficulties. However, an exemption was granted for the E10 to replace the outdated JNR class 4110 locomotives. This was necessary because no existing locomotive was suitable for the gradients on the Ōu main line , where the 4110 was used.

The boiler of the E10 was a special construction based on the JNR D52 series with a grate area reduced by 0.55 square meters.

Five locomotives were manufactured by Kisha Seizō Kaisha ( 汽車 製造 会 社 ) in Osaka in 1948. They were the last steam locomotives built for the Japanese National Railways .

The last copy in regular service was retired in 1962.

Preserved copies

One E10 was retained: E10 2 in the Ōme railway park in Ōme , Tokyo .
