The Jabbek below the clock tower

The Jabbek or Platzjabbek is a wooden figure head from the Middle Ages on the Cologne town hall tower , which opens its mouth and sticks out its tongue every hour on the hour. It has not been historically proven whether the Jabbek stands as a symbol for the attainment of rule by the guilds and gaffs that built the town hall tower in 1396. The name is a combination of the Cologne term Jappe ('to tear open your mouth') and the French bec ('mouth', 'beak').

As a counterpart to Jabbeck, the historical figure of the Kallendresser reveals his backside on the Alter Markt diagonally opposite the town hall .
