Jacinto Convit García (born September 11, 1913 in Caracas ; † May 12, 2014 ibid) was a Venezuelan medic .

Life

Convit's best-known accomplishments were the development of the first vaccine against leprosy and another against leishmaniasis , for which he was nominated for the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine . On April 10, 1987, he received the Prince of Asturias Prize for Scientific and Technical Research. He also received the Damien-Dutton Award , the National Prize for Medicine in Venezuela , the Science and Technology Prize of Mexico, and the Pan-American Soopr and Horowitz Awards. He worked for the World Health Organization for a long time and worked as the head of the Institute for Biomedicine in Venezuela.
