Jack Barnes (medic)

John Handyside "Jack" Barnes ( 1922 - 1985 ) was an Australian doctor and physicist in Queensland , Australia .

Barnes was Medical Superintendent on Thursday Island on Torres Strait from 1947 to 1953 . From 1953 he worked as a general practitioner in Cairns .

Carukia barnesi

He became known for his research on the box jellyfish . He also discovered Irukandji syndrome in 1961 . He let himself and his son brush off an Irukandji jellyfish to make sure that it really is the said jellyfish. The Irukandji jellyfish is a subspecies of the box jellyfish and is mostly found off the Australian coast. Jack Barnes couldn't find an antidote yet.

Research by Jack Barnes has also made the jellyfish known as Carukia barnesi .
