Works

Nothing is known about the life of Jacobus Barle, about the dates of his birth and death or about the places of his work. His name became known through a three-part instrumental composition that is in the chansonnier Cancionero de Segovia from 1502; this manuscript starts with “Moyses”. The composer borrowed the melody from Heinrich Isaac's “Fuge la morie” , using the polyphonic technique of parody .

Jacobus Barle also left a three-part composition without text and without a title, which is in the manuscript FlorBN BR 229 on folio 135v-136 . This source dates from around 1492 or 1493. The theme melody of the tenor part of this work corresponds exactly to the melody of a Dutch song that has come down to us in the Cancionero de Segovia . In the source this textless composition with the beginning “Het es al ghedaen” is assigned to Heinrich Isaac.
