Jacques Bretel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacques Bretel or Jacques Bretex was a French language troubadour in the late 13th century. More precise life dates are unknown.

The only work that has come down to us is Le Tournoi de Chauvency (The Chauvency Tournament), which he signed and dated 1285. It is about 4,500 verses long poem in which he describes the course of a six-day tournament that was organized by the Counts of Chiny in Chauvency-le-Château in October 1285 . The poem in 13th century French, mixed with Lorraine dialect forms, is one of the masterpieces of French literature of the Middle Ages.
