Millennium field

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called millennium field is a piece of land in the city of Leipzig in the Lindenau district .

history

The property with a size of approx. 23,000 m² was acquired from the then agricultural machinery factory Rudolph Sack as part of the development of Plagwitz by the industrialist Karl Heine from 1867 and built on in several stages. After 1946, the expropriated company was continued as a state-owned company Leipziger Bodenwerkgeräte (BBG). After privatization activities from 1990 to 1993, operations continued in a greatly reduced form until 1998. The 1999 demolition was followed by the planting of rye as an art activity as part of the Leipzig EXPO 2000 projects , which is believed to be the origin of the name.

outlook

The future of the property is uncertain as of November 2019. The originally planned sale of the area by the private owner Leipziger Stadtbau AG to the city of Leipzig for the purpose of building a school center does not seem to have come about. The long fallow property is now also used in a variety of ways by residents.
