Jaime Martins Barata

Jaime Martins Barata (* 1899 - May 15, 1970 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese designer and medalist .

Life

Jaime Martins Barata became a half-orphan at an early age and was brought through high school by his mother with great financial sacrifice together with his brother. Later he was able to continue his studies in Lisbon . First he trained as a mathematics teacher at the Lisaboa Escola Normal Superior . For a while he studied economics at the Lisaboa Escola Superior de Comércio but found his way back to the school teacher. From 1922 to 1947 he taught art and mathematics at some of the leading Lisbon high schools.

Jaime Martins Barata used to paint with watercolors as a teenager. During his studies in Lisbon he kept in contact with artists, painters, sculptors and architects. He himself remained an amateur watercolor painter.

Then followed a period of part-time activity as an artist: illustrator of magazines, photojournalist, documentaries. In 1940 he began working as a monumental painter illustrating Portuguese history and he was invited by the Portuguese Post to design a stamp for the 1940 World Expo in Portugal.

In 1947 he was given the position of art advisor for the Post. He kept this job until his retirement.

He died in Lisbon on May 15, 1970.
