Live and act

To distinguish it from his relatives and possible cousins of the same name, Jakob Colyn in Sint Jakobstrass , Jakob Colyn was also called Jakob am Markt or Jakob van Herle because he, like his parents before, lived in the Herle house on the market. He was the son of Henken (Henricus) Colyn van Herle (around 1272 - after 1331) and Catharina Wimmer and first appeared as a councilor in 1338. In the years 1342, 1344, 1351, 1354 and 1358 Colyn was elected mayor of the Free Imperial City of Aachen. From 1358 he was a member of the college of aldermen and in 1364 he was appointed Christoffel of Ponttor County. As part of the negotiations for the extension of the Maas-Rhein peace alliance, Jakob Colyn held the office of jury as a representative of the city of Aachen from November 11, 1364 to October 8, 1369. This peace alliance between Kurköln and the Duchy of Brabant as well as the cities of Aachen and Cologne , founded in 1351 , campaigned for the lifting of unjust tariffs and the protection of traveling merchants and pilgrims.

Jakob Colyn was married to Jutta Havermanns for the first time, with whom he had a daughter, Agnes, who later married Matthias von Hochkirchen von Gut Berger-Hochkirchen in Laurensberg , the father of the mayor Gottschalk von Hochkirchen . According to the Burtscheider Book of the Dead, Jakob Colyn was married to Mechtildis von Gürzenich in his second marriage. Colyn was the leaseholder of the Kulprie mill in Burtscheid, which belonged to the property of the Burtscheid Imperial Abbey . In 1377 the future mayor Rikolf Colyn , a possible son of Jakob Colyn, waived this lease in favor of the abbess there.
