Jamadagni
Jamadagni ( Sanskrit जमदग्नि jamadagni m.) Was a Brahmin who is counted among the Rishis .
family
Jamadagni belonged to the Bhargava family . His father was Richika and his mother Satyavati. With his wife Renuka he fathered five sons: Rumanvat, Sushena, Vasu, Vishvavasu and Parashurama , the sixth avatar of Vishnu .
Life
Satyavati was a daughter of Gadhi who, as king, belonged to the warrior caste of the Kshatriya . When she and her mother became pregnant at the same time, Richika, who belonged to the Brahmin caste , prepared two meals, one for his wife Satyavati, to ensure that the son would become Brahmin like the father, and one for her mother, so that her son would have a kshatrya will. But since the two dishes were confused, the Brahmin son Jamadagni was born with the characteristics of a Kshatrya, while his uncle Vishvamitra received the characteristics of a Brahmin.
Jamadagni married Renuka, the daughter of Prasenajit. The couple lived as a hermit in the forest and had five sons.
Jamadagni had a sacred cow, Surabhi, who granted all wishes. When Jamadagni and his sons were absent, the thousand-armed king Kartavirya visited the hermitage, felled the trees and stole the wishing cow. Parashurama retaliated by cutting off his thousand hands to Kartavirya and eventually killing him with his arrows. His sons then rushed to the hermitage and killed the defenseless Jamadagni, whereupon Parashurama swore that he would kill all the kshatryas.
