James Henry Reynolds

James Henry Reynolds VC (born March 2, 1844 in Kingstown , † April 3, 1932 in London ) was a British officer and bearer of the Victoria Cross .

Life

James Henry Reynolds, born in Ireland, attended Castleknock College and Trinity College, Dublin .

At the age of 34 he took part as a military doctor in the British Army on 22/23. January 1879 took part in Rorke's Drift in Natal, South Africa. For the valiant treatment of the wounded and the ammunition supply of the defenders of the hospital in the opposing crossfire, he received the Victoria Cross and was promoted to major physician on January 23, 1879.

At his side was his fox terrier Dick, who despite being shot only left him once to bite a Zulu attacker. Dick was mentioned separately in the military report.

The medal

His Victoria Cross is on display at the Army Medical Services Museum .

The events during the fighting for Rorke's Drift were filmed in the 1964 film Zulu with Michael Caine.
