James L. McHard

James L. McHard is an American musicologist , horn player, and composer .

McHard studied mathematics at the University of Michigan . He played as a horn player in various symphony and brass orchestras. His avant-garde compositions Virtuals and Tremors (the former for computers, the latter for computers, tapes and instruments) were performed with great success at the Twice Festival of Experimental Music in Ann Arbor.

McHard has given guest lectures on experimental music and the role of mathematics in composition on various occasions in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. At the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México he read to Julio Estrada's experimental composition class on the future of modernism in music. At American Book Publishing he published the book The Future of Modern Music .
