Helmut Spieß (director)

Helmut Spieß (* 1902 in Ilmenau ; † March 11, 1962 ) was a German film director and dramaturge.

Life

Spieß studied German in Jena and completed his studies in 1933 with a dissertation on the subject of Goethe, Eckermann and "Faust on the Stage" . As a student, he had already directed the theater at the Jena Adult Education Center. After 1933 he became chief dramaturge at the Nationaltheater Weimar and worked at DEFA from 1950 until his death in 1962.

At first he was employed by DEFA as a dramaturge and in 1953, after Wolfgang Schleif left the FRG, he was appointed director of the film Witches . His directorial debut, which was successful, was followed by numerous other directorial work for the cinema, and shortly before his death in 1961 with a honeymoon without a husband , a job for the television of the GDR.
