James Maryanski
James Maryanski (born before 1986) is an American microbiologist.
From 1986 to 2006 he was the head of the FDA's biotech division , which is responsible for food control and drug approval in the United States . The first approvals for GMOs such as the Flavr Savr tomato , Bt maize and RoundupReady plants fell during his term of office .
He coined the principle that genetically modified plants are harmless because they only produce nature-identical proteins (substantial equivalence).
