Gerhard Stumme

Gerhard Stumme (born February 16, 1871 in Leipzig ; † September 21, 1955 there ) was a German surgeon and orthopedist and collector of literature on Faust material .

Life

Gerhard Stumme was born on February 16, 1871 in Leipzig. Here he also spent most of his life. As a student he attended the Nicolai High School in Leipzig . After graduating from high school, he studied medicine in his hometown, in Freiburg im Breisgau and in Berlin . In 1926 he married his wife Eva (born April 7, 1899 in Berlin). Stumme died on September 21, 1955 in Leipzig.

Little is known about mute medical practice. In 1904 he opened a private clinic for surgery and orthopedics at Elsterstrasse 33, according to the Leipzig address book of 1905. Stumme achieved notoriety primarily for his collection of literature on fist material.

Fist collection

According to his own account, Gerhard Stumme has been collecting literature on the Faust topic since his youth. In 1932 his collection was shown in the Leipzig Grassi Museum in the exhibition "Faust and his world". In 1949, Stumme offered the city of Leipzig's Faust collection for sale. The sale did not materialize. That is why the collection was donated to the National Research and Memorial Sites in Weimar in 1953/54. At that time it contained more than 10,000 prints, manuscripts and other objects. Together with Alexander Tille's smaller Faust collection , it forms the core of the Weimar Faust collection, which is kept in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar . Files and letters from Gerhard Stumme are in the Goethe and Schiller Archive in Weimar, and individual letters are also preserved in the Goettingen State and University Library .
