James Moyer

James Moyer (* 1959 ) is an American percussionist, composer and music teacher.

After attending Shamokin Area High School, Moyer studied music education at Susquehanna University and earned his Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Oklahoma . His teachers included percussionists Richard Gipson , John Bannon , Stan Leonard , Gordon Stout and Leigh Howard Stevens . He also studied conducting with William Wakefield .

As a member of the Percussive Orchestra of the University of Oklahoma, he took part in the 1985 Percussive Arts Society International Convention and appeared as a soloist on its debut CD Laser Woodcuts . He has performed with musicians such as Diane Shuur , Dave Liebman , Steve Allen and the Canadian Brass and, as a timpanist with the Allentown Band and the Allentown Symphony Orchestra , takes part in around fifty concerts a year.

In 1986, Moyer became director of percussion training and bands at Millikin University in Illinois, where he formed several ensembles, including the Millikin Marimba Band . In 1998 he stopped teaching and worked for Apple Computer as a university contact agent. In 2002 he became a music administrator at Marywood University . Since 2004 he has been a full-time band director at Lafayette University . Moyer composed a number of music adaptations for marimba and wrote a marimba textbook ( Four-mallet method for marimba ).
