The Jan Matejko House

The Jan Matejko House in Kraków at ul. Floriańska 41 is a museum dedicated to the painter Jan Matejko (1838–1893), who was born there and lived there all his life.

The house was built in the 16th century and was rebuilt several times in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In 1872 Jan Matejko designed a new facade together with the architect Tomasz Pryliński .

Two years after the painter's death, the Jan Matejko Society acquired the house and part of the collections from the deceased's family. On May 1, 1896, the first rooms were opened to the public.

In 1904 the Jan Matejko House was declared a branch of the Kraków National Museum .

The Matejko family's living quarters are on the first floor, his birth room on the second floor and the studio on the third floor.
