The National Museum in Krakow ( Polish: Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie ) was founded on October 7th, 1879 by decision of the Krakow City Council .

Initially, the museum consisted of two rooms on the upper floor of the Krakow Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) in the middle of the main market .

The museum's collections grew thanks to generous donations. They include works of painting, graphics, sculpture, handicrafts and a coin collection.

The museum received new exhibition rooms in historical buildings, including a. in the homes of deceased Krakow artists.

In 1934 the construction of the new, modern museum building in Czarna Wieś began. The first rooms were only handed over in 1970, the final completion took place in 1990.

In addition to the main building (Aleja 3 Maja 1), the National Museum has several branches:

  8. The Józef Mehoffer House (ul. Krupnicza 26)
  9. The Erasmus Ciołek Bishops Palace (ul.Kanonicza 17)
  10. European cultural center "Europeum" (pl. Sikorskiego 6)
