The Emmerich Hutten Czapski Museum

The Emmerich Hutten Czapski Museum in Kraków at ul. Piłsudskiego 12 is a branch of the Kraków National Museum . The museum is dedicated to the coin collection of Count Emmerich Hutten-Czapski (1828–1896).

Born in Stańków (Belarus), Count Hutten-Czapski was in the service of Tsar Alexander II for almost 30 years until 1879 . As a Catholic of Polish descent, he was harassed more and more often in St. Petersburg. He returned to his Stańków estate and devoted himself to looking after his coin collection. He sold the collection of Russian coins to the Crown Prince Georg Michajlowitsch and since then has dealt exclusively with the Polish coins acquired by Count Tyszkiewicz in 1854.

Count Hutten-Czapski left Russia in 1894 and moved to Krakow . He bought the house built in 1884 as his residence. Next to him he had a building built for his coin collection. He did not live to see the opening of the exhibition building. His heirs gave the collection to the City of Krakow in 1903. A year later, the coin collection was declared a branch of the Kraków National Museum. The residence bought by the Count's heirs was converted into a museum.

The coin collection was constantly expanded thanks to generous donations from Krakow citizens. In addition, there were handicrafts, pictures, porcelain etc. After the outbreak of war in 1914, the coins were stowed in barrels and buried. The museum reopened in 1917. The Hutten-Czapski family continued to look after the museum and donated money and art objects.

The collections suffered a lot of damage during the Second World War . After the end of the war, the museum had to be thoroughly renovated and refurbished.
