Jan Philipp Burgard (* 1985 in Iserlohn ) is a German television journalist, presenter and book author. He is currently the USA correspondent and deputy head of the ARD studio in Washington.

Life and career as a journalist

Even during his school days he wrote for the local newspaper in his hometown, the Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger. From 2004 he studied political science, modern history and public law in Bonn and at the Sorbonne in Paris. During his studies he wrote for newspapers and magazines such as the Bonner Generalanzeiger, Handelsblatt, Focus, Die Welt and Die Zeit.

As a producer in the ARD studio in Washington, Burgard experienced the rise of Barack Obama in 2008 and wrote his dissertation on his “election campaign of the century”. He received his PhD in 2011. After working for the ARD Tagesthemen and as a reporter for NDR and ZDF, he became the personal assistant to WDR director Tom Buhrow. In this role he was responsible for the innovation budget, among other things. In 2016 he moved to the Cologne editorial office of the Tagesschau. There Burgard reported on domestic issues and live on site on international news events such as the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels and the 2016 US presidential election.

In it he speaks to well-known personalities (such as Austria's Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Federal Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer or the writer TC Boyle) about transatlantic relations. In addition to political backgrounds, Burgard attaches great importance to learning a lot about the people who make politics or who are affected by it.

author

As a book author, Burgard deals with the topics of politics, society and America. Most recently, Rowohlt Verlag published his book Ausgeträum, Amerika? On the move in a divided country that made it onto the SPIEGEL bestseller list.
